A Stroll Among the Striding Arches of Cairnhead

Art meets the great outdoors among the Striding Arches in Dumfries and Galloway where Andy Goldsworthy’s red sandstone constructions surround the natural amphitheatre of Cairnhead, deep in the Southern Uplands. Each arch has a seven metre span, and consists of thirty one blocks of red sandstone; each offers a view of the other two. Beguiling though they are, however, the artist considers the real art lies in the intangible connection between them, “the bit inbetween”. Judge for yourself. The project is a joint venture between Goldsworthy, one of Britain’s most innovative artists, and Cairnhead Community Forest Trust. For more information and a fascinating interview with Goldsworthy, visit the Striding Arches website.
